Name: Transition Stories: Moving to the Palouse
Date: April 18, 2013
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
Community Colleges of Spokane-Pullman Campus is proud to present Transition Stories: Moving to the Palouse, on April 18th at 7pm in the Gladish Center View Room, 115 NW State ST. On average, the population of the Palouse is fairly homogenous. According to the 2010 Census, international and minority groups made up about 10% of the residents. We at the Community Colleges of Spokane-Pullman Campus recognize that many of our students have moved to the Palouse from other countries and may not immediately fit into our homogenous culture. We have invited a panel of students who have moved to the Palouse from other countries to share their stories of transition. Dr. Romuald K. Afatchao, Associate Director of the Martin Institute and Program in International Studies at the University of Idaho, will join the event as a guest panelist. Dr. Afatchoa comes from Togo, a West African Country and his personal, professional, and academic experience will add a welcomed benefit to our panel. The purpose of the event is to educate the audience about the labyrinth of cultural differences that must be carefully navigated for anyone moving to the area from another culture, the difficulties of navigating that labyrinth, and how to build a network of support during the process. A question/ answer session facilitated by Dr. Nishant Shahani, a professor of Critical Culture, Gender, and Race Studies at Washington State University will follow the panel presentation. Personal stories are one of the most effective methods of communication we share as human beings. Please come and join us for this important and informative community-building event. We hope this discussion will open an honest dialogue and lead to many more of its kind. Please join us and add your voice. All are welcome.
